Century Club Wine Varietals: Auxerrois Blanc

Auxerrois Blanc vineAs our next Century Club tasting approaches (May 19th), I’ll spend the next couple weeks highlighting some of the unique varietals that we’ll be tasting.

Name:  Auxerrois Blanc, Auxerrois Blanc de Laquenexy, Pinot Auxerrois
White or red:  White
Grows:  Alsace, Germany, Luxembourg, Oregon
Known relatives:  Sibling of Chardonnay, suggested cross between Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc
Tastes like:  Some compare to a Pinot Gris with neutral flavors of pear, citrus flowers.  It has a nice balance of acidity, fruit, and alcohol.  It can be aged in stainless steel or oak.
Price range:  $13 – $35
Examples:  2007 Adelsheim Auxerrois, Oregon, $17
